UK – G99 Compliant Grid Controller for Vensys

GridGEM enables G99 compliant Grid Controller to allow Vensys wind turbines to connect to the Grid and provide required dynamic control

Overview & Client Problem

Vensys wind turbines, based in Germany, required a UK Grid compliant solution to be able to interface between their wind turbine assets and the Grid - providing the required real-time control to meet reactive power, frequency & other control requirements.

After a tendering process, Argand Solutions were chosen as the main provider for Vensys and we have just completed our first project in South Wales, on behalf of Vensys for their client Clean Earth Energy.

The project was successfully approved by the Distribution Network Operator (DNO), Western Power, and is now providing energy to a local manufacturing business on a power purchase agreement (PPA.)

Argand’s Solution

Prior to the design & delivery of a the specific control solution for this project, Argand have been through a significant research & development process to fully understand all of the detailed requirements for G99 projects in the Uk and the control, communication and data requirements.

These requirements were built into our overarching solution for Vensys and then, once clarified and confirmed, Argand went through a detailed design engineering process for the specific project to ensure that all of the localised physical & specific project constraints .were accounted for within the overall design.

The G99 compliant Grid controller was supplied to the client site for the client’s installation team to install. This was then commissioned by Argand, whilst the DNO witness test was led by Argand Solutions to ensure that all of the DNO requirements were met, understood and any issues mitigated.

The Grid controller provides real-time monitoring and an integrated control interface with the Vensys wind turbine system to ensure power, reactive power & frequency are all managed within the required tolerances.

In addition, the Grid controller also had to interface with the DNO’s Constraint Panel Interface (CPI) system which ensures the turbine can be turned off if the need arises due to wider Grid instability.

Client Benefits

The client now has a solution that will solve the G99 compliant requirements of any project in the UK and with the data to prove to additional DNOs that it is working and meeting the incredibly high standards required.
